Absolutely not! If what you’re doing isn’t working for you, it just means you need to learn a new way. Sometimes you get stuck in thought patterns and you need a professional to help you see things differently. Facing anxiety and related issues head on is courageous.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
The gold standard of treatment for anxiety disorders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. Research indicates CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety and related issues. You will learn to identify maladaptive thoughts that contribute to your anxiety, and then gently challenge them to promote healthier thinking and behaviors.
What is Mindfulness?
In a nut shell, Mindfulness is intentionally being in the moment and paying attention to your senses, thoughts and feelings without judgement. It is learning how to clear your mind of everything but what is in front of you. Studies show Mindfulness practices can actually change your brain composition so you feel calmer and more relaxed. It can help with symptoms such as racing thoughts, fear, fretting about the future, and dwelling on the past to name a few!
Will I need medication?
There are many factors in determining if medication would be benificial in conjunction with your counseling. This is something we can explore together. I do not prescribe medication, but I can refer you to a psychiatrist in the community who can.
How long does therapy take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time in counseling depends on many factors. A few things that help the process along are your desire for personal growth change and your commitment to the process.
